Drive carefully especially
at dusk, dawn and in the night as this is when the animals come out in
search of food.
Move road victims off the
road. Scavengers such as crows and wedge-tailed eagles feed on carcasses
of animals already killed on the roads. These scavengers are often hit
themselves while feeding.
Check dead animals for
babies. Marsupials (like possums, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and
koalas) will often have babies in their pouches when they are hit. Take
a look inside the pouch and if the baby is still alive, keep it warm and
take it to a vet or call the wildlife rescue group in your area. Babies
can survive in the pouch for several days after the death of their
mother.
Please be aware that it
is not in the best interests of the animal to be cared for by an
inexperienced person. It is also an offence to keep or raise a native
animal if not registered with the Department of Sustainability and
Environment.
